As part of its 50th anniversary of service to Cape Coral, The Kiwanis Club of Cape Coral has expanded its fund-raising efforts for their “Childhood Hunger Backpack Program” by accepting the role of host of the 5th Annual Best South Cape Martini Competition.

The 2011 event will be Saturday, January 29th. “The South Cape CRA has organized and run the Best Martini Competition as a successful event for 4 years,” said Kiwanis President Sam Huber, “and we are so pleased that the CRA is turning over this event to us, and the Kiwanis Club will be able to raise the funds necessary to help eradicate hunger among our elementary students through the distribution of packs of food each and every Friday.”

Tickets for the Competition are $20 each, and can be purchased at:

• Leapin Lizard Bar & Grille- 1719 Cape Coral Parkway E. (239-542-6400)
• True Value Hardware- 1407 Cape Coral Parkway E. (239-542-3166)
• Ralph’s Place Liquor Store- 1305 Cape Coral Parkway E. (239-541-5484)
• Cape Dog Bakery- 1207 Cape Coral Parkway E. (239-542-9663)
• The Twisted Conch- 837 SE 47th Terrace (239-542-6622)
• Kiwanis Store South- 708 SE 47th Terrace (239-542-2849)

There are only 1,000 tickets available, and they quickly sell out. Ticket holders will be shuttled by trolleys to the various locations within South Cape that are competing, and at the end of the evening they serve as the judges that vote on the best martin in categories such as Best Classic Martini, Best Exotic Martini, and Best Dessert Martini. A $500 cash prize will be awarded to the Best Martini in each of the three categories. This year, Kiwanis will award a $500 cash prize for the participating establishment that serves “The Best Appetizer”

“We have participated in the Martini Competition each year,” said Joanne Stevens of Ralph’s Place, “and not only do we enjoy the chance to support this new Kiwanis fund-raising event, but also see many of the participants return during the year as regular customers.” “Last year we won in the category of Best Exotic, with our “Mystic Mango Martini” she said, “and this year we are hoping to again be a top vote getter.”

“Our store has been a ticket sale location since the Martini event started in 2007″ said Sandy Smith of True Value Hardware, “we look forward to another great, sold out event”.

Helen Ramey, Economic Development Manager of the South Cape CRA has been the director of the event for the past four years. ” A major role of the CRA is to support the business community in South Cape, and we engage in a number of activities to bring awareness to the South Cape CRA area,” Helen stated, “and like the Farmers’ Market and the Street Market, we organize and support these ‘feet on the street’ efforts and then transfer them to other organizations that can both benefit from running successful fund raising events and can assist the CRA in its vision of creating a dining and entertainment district in South Cape.”

Each tasting location will serve a delicious appetizer. Ticket holders will gather at Leapin Lizard and Club Square for the check-in process starting at 6:45 PM to obtain their wristband and passport to the event and then travel to the different locations by trolley. The cost of the ticket covers the transportation, the martini samples, and the appetizers.

“Safety is also on the menu,” said Kiwanis President Huber, “as “Special Designated Driver Tickets” are also available on the date of the event for $10 for groups of two or more, and will allow the designated driver to taste all the appetizers and have access to the trolleys.” In addition, taxis will be available throughout the South Cape area. Ramey also points out that for those desiring to enjoy the evening in South Cape and not worry about driving, the Holiday Inn Express, and Hampton Inn are located within walking distance of the Martini event.
